Google’s battery app is now available in the Play Store as ‘Device Health Services’

Google is continuing the trend of moving more and more apps and services out of the core OS and into the Play Store. The app’s description in the Play Store points out that Device Health Services predicts how long your phone’s battery will last based on your usage. The only feature listed is “Personalized battery usage estimates”. After updating, you probably won’t notice much of anything. It looks like all of the updates are under the hood with no visual changes at all.

What is Device Health Services? Google describes it as a service/app that “predicts how long your phone’s battery will last based on your usage.” As the screenshots indicate, this is the battery section inside of your phone’s settings that relays to you your usage. On your usage chart, you should see two numbers, one that indicates how long your phone has been unplugged, along with another that estimates how much longer your battery will last. This app, Device Health Services, apparently helps with that number. There is likely some other magic going on under there, but those are the basics that Google is sharing with us.

In terms of this update, the changelog says that there are “model & infrastructure improvements,” as well as “more models” and bug fixes. OK, then!

Google Assistant will sound more natural thanks to WaveNet

09 OCTOBER 2017
Google Assistant will start to sound a lot more natural thanks to WaveNet - a new text-to-speech (or speech synthesis) system created by Google's DeepMind branch.
WaveNet differs from the traditional Concatenative TTS, which uses a large base of pre-recorded speech by a single voice actor, and Parametric TTS, which uses a computer generated voice, in that it can create individual waveforms using 16,000 samples per second.
WaveNet uses a large dataset of speech samples and has been trained for over 12 months to recognize which tones follow each other and what waveforms are realistic.
There's a lot of technical mumbo jumbo behind the scenes you can read about in the Source link below. But how about a practical example of the effect of WaveNet on Google Assistant?
Before WaveNet
And after WaveNet
WaveNet will be used with US English and Japanese for the time being but Google will likely be making other languages more natural sounding in time.
It took DeepMind's team 12 months to create WaveNet and optimize to work fast enough for broad use, just imagine what it can do with another 12 months.

Flipkart’s sale: How mobile exchange discount works on Mi A1, iPhone SE, etc

Flipkart's 'Festive Dhamaka Days' sale is on with exchange discounts on Xiaomi's Mi A1, Mi Max 2, Apple iPhone SE, etc. We explain how this 'exchange' works.

Flipkart' Festive Dhamaka Days: Exchange offers on Apple iPhone SE, Xiaomi Mi A1, Mi Max 2 and how they work.
Flipkart’s ‘Festive Dhamaka Days’ sale is on for the next 11 hours or so, and mobiles like Xiaomi Mi A1, Xiaomi Mi Max, Redmi Note 4, Apple’s iPhone SE, iPhone 7, etc all have exchange discounts on them as well. The Flipkart product page for many of these mobiles will say: Upto Rs 14,000 off on exchange.
Now for consumers this might seem like a really good deal, especially if one considers the price of Mi A1, which is Rs 14,999. If you actually get Rs 14,000 off, then the price is effectively Rs 999 in case of the Mi A1 and the Mi Max 2, which has a similar deal. But the exchange discount does have a catch, and we explain why these high discounts are not really possible to score .
First, what is exchange discount on mobiles, smartphones ?
Essentially Flipkart, and even Amazon, will offer further discount on the final price of a smartphone if you are trading in an older mobile phone for this. So if Flipkart has listed Xiaomi Mi A1’s price as Rs 14,999 and promises Rs 14,000 off on exchange, this means the maximum discount you can get for your older smartphone. Effectively if you did get Rs 14,000 off, the phone would cost Rs 999. But there’s a slim chance of that actually happening.
What’s the catch with these exchange offers?
Chances are your older mobile phone, unless it is an Apple iPhone devices (6s and above) or the Samsung Galaxy S8, it won’t fetch such a high price on the Flipkart exchange value. Users should note that under the ‘Buy with Exchange’ value, the company has already determined the price for various models of mobiles across each brand. Also Apple users are at a considerable advantage here as even the older iPhones have a higher exchange value compared to many other mobiles.
How do I check the value of my old mobile phone on Flipkart for exchange?
As we’ve pointed out, the value of each mobile is pre-determined by Flipkart. In order to check the value of your old phone, click on the ‘Buy with Exchange’ option on the product page. A separate pop-up opens on the page itself. Choose the model number, the brand name from the list and see the value that is listed for the product. If you wish to trade the older mobile for the new phone and think the price quote is worth it, enter the IMEI number and hit ‘Buy with Exchange.’ If your mobile is not listed, then the exchange scheme doesn’t apply.
Flipkart, Flipkart Festive Dhamaka Days, Flipkart mobile phone sale, Flipkart mobiles sale, Flipkart mobiles exchange offer, Flipkart Mi A1 discount, Mi A1 exchange offer, Redmi Note 4 exchange offer, Redmi Note 4 sale, Apple iPhone SE exchange, iPhone SE discountApple iPhone models will likely fetch a higher price compared to most other brands.
What are terms and conditions of the ‘Buy with Exchange’ scheme for Flipkart?
Flipkart has a list of terms and conditions for the mobile phone. A user has to agree to these before accepting the exchange offer. Also it is best not to lie about the condition of the device because if they don’t match, then the company might not accept the mobile phone at the time of pickup.
Flipkart’s terms and conditions say that “brand and model of the old device” has to match what you’ve claimed. So if you are claiming to trade in an iPhone 6s, then it has to be an iPhone 6s at the time of pickup, not any other phone. The phone should switch on for a minimum of 30 seconds without connecting to charger, adds the company.
Also the IMEI number of the old mobile has to be the same as the one provided when hitting buy. Most importantly the screen should have not cracks. The body of the phone should not be sporting major dents or have buttons missing either. The mobile phone has to be unlocked, all data removed, etc. For Apple iPhones, the iCloud had to be deactivated, and the device has to be in a working condition.
So how much off can I get under exchange for my old mobile phone, if I don’t have an iPhone?
Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, Redmi Note 4 users can expect between Rs 3150 to 3500 off on the final price. Older models from Xiaomi might only fetch Rs 1200 on exchange. The rates are similar across the brands as well. In fact, the only smartphone we saw fetching Rs 14,000 off was the Samsung Galaxy S8. Unless you are exchanging it already for Apple iPhone 8 Plus, trading this in for a mid-range phone doesn’t make sense.
Apple iPhone SE also comes with up to Rs 15,300 off under exchange on the website. Again the maximum discount is determined by the model of the phone, and unless there’s another iPhone on the list, don’t expect a very high price cut.

Xiaomi Mi A1 XDA Review: Android One and Xiaomi Hardware Result in a Delightful & Affordable Stock Experience

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is one of Xiaomi’s biggest releases of the year 2017. Despite its overall humbling package, the phone marks a few important milestones for the Chinese company as well as for the Android ecosystem.
The Mi A1 is important because it is the first Xiaomi smartphone to ship without Xiaomi’s own custom UX, MIUI on top of the Android OS. It is also the first device that is the result of a reboot of Google’s Android One program — an initiative that saw little success in its first phase in India. The Mi A1 is also the first Xiaomi device in recent times that does not see an equivalent launch in China, becoming the first Xiaomi device to be India-exclusive at launch.

Not Reliance Jio or Airtel, but this telecom operator provided highest 4G upload speed in September

Idea Cellular, on Saturday, while citing the data compiled by telecom regulator Trai's My Speed App, claimed that it achieved the fastest highest 4G upload speed in September. Telecom wars are at their height and what consumers are seeing is the tussle for leadership getting fiercer by the day. That includes not just standout offers and freebies but also speed of data service and the latest unveiling of statistics has thrown up a big surprise. Idea Cellular, on Saturday, while citing the data compiled by telecom regulator Trai’s My Speed App, claimed that it achieved the fastest highest 4G upload speed in September. Idea Cellular topped the chart in terms of average upload 4G speed for September at 6.307 Mbps, the private telecom player said in a statement based on Trai data, reported PTI. The operator said that it has been achieving the highest upload speed in the last six months and has recorded a high average download speed of 8.74 Mbps (megabits per second) during September.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) tabulates data download speed with the help of its MySpeed app. According to the PTI report, Idea Cellular has rapidly expanded the network to 2.60 lakh sites across the country, with 50 per cent dedicated to mobile broadband services. The company claims to add about 50,000 broadband sites over the last 12 months to August, growing its broadband footprint to cover 5,888 census towns and close to 1.05 lakh villages and reaching out to 45 per cent population of the country.
This data comes days after a report by OpenSignal revealed that between June 1 and August 31, 2017, Airtel provided the fastest 4G and 3G internet in India with average downloads of 9.2 Mbps and 3.6 Mbps respectively, while Idea and Vodafone continued the second place fight. The report placed Jio on the fourth position despite a dramatic increase in its speed in the last few months. Jio’s average 4G download speed was recorded as 5.81 Mbps.Vodafone bagged the second spot with 7.45 Mbps average speeds. However, when it comes to overall metric, where both the speed of 3G as well as 4G internet is taken into consideration, the equation changes drastically. In this case, Reliance Jio emerges on top even though the speeds remain at 5.81 Mbps. Airtel is second at 5.05 Mbps with Vodafone scoring 4.06 Mbps.
