Google’s battery app is now available in the Play Store as ‘Device Health Services’

Google is continuing the trend of moving more and more apps and services out of the core OS and into the Play Store. The app’s description in the Play Store points out that Device Health Services predicts how long your phone’s battery will last based on your usage. The only feature listed is “Personalized battery usage estimates”. After updating, you probably won’t notice much of anything. It looks like all of the updates are under the hood with no visual changes at all.

What is Device Health Services? Google describes it as a service/app that “predicts how long your phone’s battery will last based on your usage.” As the screenshots indicate, this is the battery section inside of your phone’s settings that relays to you your usage. On your usage chart, you should see two numbers, one that indicates how long your phone has been unplugged, along with another that estimates how much longer your battery will last. This app, Device Health Services, apparently helps with that number. There is likely some other magic going on under there, but those are the basics that Google is sharing with us.

In terms of this update, the changelog says that there are “model & infrastructure improvements,” as well as “more models” and bug fixes. OK, then!
